Parking her car in the driveway, she walked up to the door of her home and unlocked the door. Once inside, she went up stairs to her room and dropped her bag on the floor beside her bed. She flung onto the bed herself, and stared up at the ceiling. It was only Wednesday, the middle of the week. She felt weak herself, and that's why she was dreading getting up for school again tomorrow. Flick normally liked school, but lately she was exhausted. Laying there, she realized it was quiet. Frowning, she stood and walked back down the set of stairs to the kitchen. No one was there... But a piece of paper was taped to the fridge door. Grabbing it, she scanned it over with her brown eyes.
Gone to the doctors, check up on the baby! We're going out for dinner after that, so we'll see you tonight, Love mom.
Flick nodded to herself and glanced to the clock on the stove. It was 4:30pm, so she figured she would start to make herself something to eat. The freezer was full of so many different things, as was the fridge, so it was just a matter of making a decision. At the moment, she didn't feel like anything special, so she grabbed a frozen veggie pizza out of the freezer and stuck it in the oven. While she waited, she jogged up the small set of stairs to her room and booted up her laptop on her desk. There was no one online really, and she didn't have any facebook notifications or any emails, so she shut the laptop once more and stood from her chair. She wasn't really comfortable in her tight jeans and restricting top, so she peeled both articles of clothing off, before realizing her blinds were open. She threw the blinds down over the window quickly, and stood in her bra and underwear, looking for something else to put on. Something that was good looking but casual, just for around the house. The smoke alarm downstairs went off, and she groaned, quickly grabbing her white cotton robe and leaving her room quickly as she wrapped it around herself. Grabbing oven mitts, she carefully opened the oven, while the squealing of the alarm rang loud. Flick's eyes widened as she realized she had put it in the oven with the cardboard udnerneath it, and there were deffinetly flames! No doubt the neighbours in the town houses on both sides of her's could hear her loud alarm. But Flick was panicking, she was trying to think fast on her feet.
First thing she did was quickly turn of the stove, and shut the oven door. The fire was small, and she was sure it wouldn't spread fast. She needed to cut the oxygen off from it. Spotting the fire extingusher, she figured it was her best bet and grabbed it, opened the stove and sprayed for a quick second. The fire was out, and she gave a sigh of relief. Looks like she was ordering in. Jogging back up to her room, she flung off the robe and grabbed a pair of shorts from her closet. After pulling them on. she quickly grabbed tank and a hoodie which she threw on before picking up her cellphone. The pizza place was on speed dial, and she quickly ordered a small personal veggie pizza then hung up the phone. All set for dinner, now she just had to wait. Long hair fell in her face, and she decided she would rather have it up, so she got a hair tie and threw it into a hair pony tail, before going down to the first level of the townhouse. The front door was shut, but it was nice outside so she opened it. Looking out, she found no reason not to sit on the porch while waiting, so she grabbed a cushion for the chair outside and went on out, sitting and propping her feet up on the rail.

[/size][/li][/ul] Marcello held no reason to return home so quickly after school got out, so, he decided to take the long route home to Stoneleigh heights – walking, rather than riding the bus or taking a vehicle. On most days, he would drive in the Nissan his father gave him after passing his road skills test. However on this day, his mother, Isabella, took the car and his sister Gabriella shopping for new clothes and whatever else caught her eye. The car did not appear as fine looking and polished as it did three years ago when he received it. He blamed most of the dents and scratches on Isabella, which is partially true. She always had a knack to break things less fragile than others were.
He sighed to himself, counting his steps along the way, and slowly crossed a railroad track. This path was familiar to him, the way he went when he had nothing better to do, no one to see, and had all the time in the world to spare. He cut through the high school’s empty football field, no practices on Wednesdays he presumed, and then followed along a back road in the southern part of Salt Lake. The road spit sharp rocks and lung-clogging dust at him every time an automobile would drive by, but he did not care, it was not as if it hurt him in anyway. By the time he entered the Stoneleigh lawns, it was already a quarter past five.
Marcello could see both rows of the townhouses on his street. He saw his house further down with an empty driveway. Yep, Isabella has yet to return home. Maybe she went to a friend’s house with Gabriella, or had more things on her errand list. Whatever it may be, Marcello decided that going home to an empty house was not a joyful thought.
Buzz, Buzz He heard from a house not to far away. He raised an eyebrow and walked at an apparently faster pace toward the anomalous blare. The nearer he came to the townhouse, the louder the sound got, and eventually he realized it was the jingle of a fire alarm going off. Marcello was more intrigued than worried at this point. Nothing exciting or different ever happened in Stoneleigh, he noticed within the first few days after he moved here. Salt Lake was silent and less exciting than all that occurred behind the scenes of New York.
The alarm quit as quickly as it started. Standing on the sidewalk outside he detected no obvious signs of digression, burning objects, or windows charred at the intense heat of fire. Her house, as a young woman sat on the porch, looked like a regular house with a typical yard, and a quite standard façade. Either way, he took liberty upon himself and asked the lass; “I heard a fire alarm blaring. Are you alright?” His accent was recognizable, his poise moderately thoughtful, and his build was clearly tall.

Well, in truth, it was far from setting. The days were pretty long, so she couldn't say it was almost sunset. But it was headed in that direction, casting shadows on all that stood in it's way. Sunsets usually occured at about 7pm during the spring months, like May. But you could feel the cooler breeze of the evening started to kick in around 5 or 6. Flick was glad she had grabbed a hoodie to throw over her tank top, and zipped it up half way, to just past where her belly button was. The young adult sat on the wicker chair, staring out over the townhouses across from hers where the sun was starting to head back to the ground.
There weren't many people outside. It was probably because this was a typical time for people to be eating dinner. Flick would be too, if it hadn't been for the stupid incident. She couldn't believe how she had left the carboard on the pizza! Hearing someone walking, she turned her head to the side to see a familiar guy. 'I heard a fire alarm blaring. Are you alright?' She looked up, and realized he was much closer then the last time she looked to him. This time, he was standing right in front of her house, taking her feet off the railing, she nodded. "Totally fine, thanks," she told him with a kind smile. He was familiar because he lived not far down from her and because he attended the same high school as her, also a senior. But Flick never really spoke to the guy once, not even to say hi. It wasn't because she didn't want to, she just never had gotten a chance. But Flick was a real friendly person.
"I just made a really stupid move is all," she went on, shrugging and giving a sheepish smile. "I put the cardboard in the stove along with the pizza," she admitted with a light laugh. If her hair had not been in a high pony, she probably would have pushed it behind her ears, a habit she had. When she was embarassed, she often did it more then usual. Instead, she grabbed the end of her ponytail, and ran her fingers over the tips of the hairs before letting go. Then she stood, adjusting her shorts and top, and trotted down the few steps off the porch. "Hi... I'm Flick," she said, hesitantly offering her hand after a moment, along with a kind smile. Shaking hands was custom for her, but some people thought it was weird. Just like when she gave her name for the first time, she got many weird looks and questions about it.

A spring breeze floated passed Marcello, Flick, and continued its way down the street. Many people in Salt Lake gladly welcomed gentle gusts of wind during this time of year. Among the population, citizens favored cooler climates than the weather conditions provided, which usually consisted of desiccated and searing heat spells. Marcello supposed not too many people went through the harsh weather differences, as the northern states possess, for a few classmates routinely complained about the intense temperature and dry atmosphere.
“Well it’s good that you are okay.” He nodded and repositioned the backpack he carried slung over one shoulder. “As for accidently burning the pizza,” he begun with smile, “We’ve all been there.” Flick’s mishap reminded him of the time he put aluminum foil in the microwave when he was a child. His mother and father were none too proud.
“Flick,” He repeated with a small smile, “What an interesting name you have.” He had no room to talk bad about her name though. How many kids named Marcello are around now days? He liked the name Flick though, it was different and unique, something the world cared less to attain.
“It’s nice to meet you.” He said. Marcello shook her hand politely in welcome as he said; “My name is Marcello.”

At some point or another, everyone messed up the food they were making. No one was perfect. Besides, she now had a pizza on the way, which meant she wouldn't go hungry. If it hadn't been for the pizza burning, she probably wouldn't even be talking to this guy now, and he seemed nice. 'Flick.' His lips cracked into a small smile, and in return, Flick's did as well as she nodded her head yes. 'What an interesting name you have.' "Interesting in a good way I hope," she laughed lightly, before retreating her hand after shaking his. At least he hadn't looked at her like she was crazy. 'My name is Marcello.' "Nice to meet you too Marcello," she replied, making sure to repeat his name. Repeating the name right after hearing it helped her to remember everyone's names.
Sticking her hands in the small pockets on her jean shorts, she dropped her shoulders. "You go to RHSM, right?" she said after a second, to confirm he went to the same school she did. Flick was quite aware of seeing him there before, but didn't want to just stand there in silence. RHSM was one of the main schools in the district, a private one at that. It was also a mouth full to say. Rowland Hall-St. Mark's Upper School wasn't something she felt the need to go around saying all the time.
With the toe of her sandal, Flick dug into the soft green grass. Her bare feet were revealed in the ogladiator style shoe that had an orange braided t-strap, so they too were exposed to the soft grass. It wasn't muddy, which was good, or she might ruin her pedicure she had gotten a week before. They were baby blue toes with a star stenciled onto the first toe. It was a habbit she had gotten into when she was outside, and was hard to break. As she did so, she waited for Marcello to answer. She was glad to speak to him, as he seemed like a really nice guy.

Marcello nodded, “Yes, I do go to Rowland High.” He thought for a brief moment regarding Flick. Since he begun this conversation, she did appear familiar. Minus knowing she lived down the street, Marcello remembered her from somewhere. She must have remembered him as well to ask if he attended the only high school near Stoneleigh, Rowland High – St. Marks.
He remembered all the times he passed her in the hallway, saw her in the parking lot after school, and noticed Flick browsing the bookshelves at the Sam Weller’s bookstore he works at. Marcello thought back to all the times he could have talked to her – all the times he paid no attention too. This was the first time he spoke to Flick, the girl down the road, the girl at school, and the frequent bookstore patron. Well, he was not sure if she enjoyed reading, or just browsing stores to waste away time. Marcello took no note of which books she glanced over, took, or passed, only that she spent some of her time within the “writing” aisle.
After an unintentional pause due to his deep thought, Marcello continued the talk with these words; “You go there too, don’t you? I think I have passed you a few times in the hallway between first and second hour.” As a night owl, Marcello never looked his very best in the early morning hours. Actually, he looked a lot like a pothead. He mentally sighed for a moment, hoping she did not think he would get involved heavily in drugs.

Flick smiled and nodded. She knew she had been right, since she was sure she'd seen him in the halls before. But unlike him, she didn't quite recall him from the bookstore. But the more she thought about it, the more she realized she knew him from somewhere besides school and the survey. Flick went to the bookstore often, since she prefered reading over watching television. Books were easy to get lost in and she read many each week. Sam Weller's Bookstore was her number one stop for reading materials. Whether she got fictional books or non-fictional, she loved the store. It had so many different options. There was a writing section that she loved to browse. They even sold really nice looking journals that she purchased now and again. Journals were something she had always kept. Almost every day she wrote several pages in a journal, and had several on the go. There was one for the things that happened in her day to day life, one for writing to God, another for writing story ideas and a couple others she wrote in randomly.
'-I think I have passed you a few times in the hallway between first and second hour.' Marcello's words broke her out of her thoughts, and she looked back up at him with her brown eyes sparkling. It took her a minute to register what he had said. "Oh, yeah, I do," she replied with a sheepish smile. "And I think you're right. First and second," she agreed, recalling his face in the morning half of the day. She would cross from the math hall to the english, always crossing paths with him, but never really said a word. His apperance in the mornings didn't really ring strong in her head, she only thought of the way she saw him at that moment.
Flick leaned against the railing of the stairs where she stood, and wondered how long the pizza would be now. Would it be totally akward if it arrived while she was talking to Marcello? If it was anyone else, she would probably invite them inside to have some. But she really didn't know him well... Maybe they could stay out on the steps and eat? Or maybe she would just invite him in when it arrived? Why not take a chance and invite him? "Hey, Marcello, I have a pizza on the way. Wanna stay and share?" she suggested with a shrug. It was a small pizza, but there would be enough for both of them.

Pizza was one of Marcello’s favorite foods, what Italian hates pizza. He looked over at his house to see if his mother and Gabriella were home yet. Of course, they were not. He figured Isabella went out to eat, since Gabriella had a bottle in her baby bag. He was not starving, but thought it would be a good idea to have some food in his belly. As for food at his house, the cupboards were bare. Isabella said she was going grocery shopping when she dropped him off at school. She always shopped for everything at once, and they were still not home.
Marcello was feeling a bit of worry in the pit of his stomach. Maybe if he stayed with Flick for a bit he could ease his mind and watch for his mother and baby sister. Marcello looked back at Flick and smiled, “Thanks. It’s nice that you invited me.” Especially since, we just met officially.
He sat his backpack on the sidewalk next to him. Thank goodness, he got rid of that heavy lead bag. He carried science books, history and math journals, notebooks, and instruction manuals in his backpack. Thud The short distance from his hip to the ground caused it to sound like falling bricks.

On the steps I guess," she suggested smiling, stepping back and sitting down on the concrete steps. They were colder then her skin, but not a shocking kind of cold. She leaned back on the step above where she sat and rested her hands across her stomach. What did make her jump though, was the thud of his backpack on hitting the ground. It wasn't a high jump, but it was noticeable, and she laughed lightly afterwards, slight embarassed.
"The pizza is veggie by the way," she told him, wondering if he would mind. "That okay?" Since Flick had been a vegetarian since she was thirteen, she never ate meat. Her parents hadn't been thrilled with this idea when she first presented it. Her mother was concerned about her getting enough protein while her father was more concerned that it would cut back his intake of meat, which was high. But Flick was set on the idea, and eight years later, it was working out perfectly.
"So Marcello, have you always lived just down the survey?" she asked him curiously, not able to remember if this was where he had lived before. Flick had been here since she was about five or six, after her mom married Alex. Before that they had lived in a crappy apartment together, all by themselves. But this was the place Flick called home.

“I don’t mind.” Marcello said taking a seat next to Flick on the porch. “Actually,” He continued, “that sounds pretty good.” Meat lovers, supreme, veggie lovers, he has yet to find any pizza combination he dislikes. Once as a dare, he tried an artichoke and sardine pizza. In his quoted words he said, "Hey, this isn’t too bad." His mother used to call him a Billy goat as a child because he ate anything and everything she dished out to him – even burnt popcorn, liver and onions, and lots of other foods typical kids detested.
“Um, No I haven’t lived here that long.” No one asked him that when he first appeared on Rowland High’s campus. The most surprising part to him was the teachers never asked where he came from, or allowed an introduction in front of a class – he liked not having too – it was just different from the usual new kid ritual. “I moved here four months ago from New York.”
Marcello lived in New York for most of his childhood as a single, obedient child of two Italians. There was not much to his life. He made it seem so, however the many secrets kept buried safely was his own, and only his, unless persuaded otherwise. Basically, he told no one until he felt comfortable to unleash his devilish deeds of the past.

Surprisingly enough, she was comfortable, and it didn't hurt at all. Thankfully, Marcello was okay with the pizza she ordered, and she wouldn't have to find him something else. Not that she minded, but she had already invited him and if he wasn't good with the food, it would be awkward. 'I moved here four months ago from New York.' The girl's brown eyes widened slightly. "Really? Wow, that's pretty cool," she smiled. "I went once, when my dad had a conference there for a week," she reminisced. "I bet it's weird, moving from somewhere so big and busy to here," she theorized with a laugh.
For Flick, the humble girl who had grown up in Salt Lake City, New York City was a foreign world. Having only been once, she didn't know it very well. When she was fourteen she went, and remembered it well. The city was easy to get used to, and after a week she felt quite comfortable there, though she probably would never fit in and make it in the city.
"Do you miss it?" she inquired with a curious and innoncent smile as she tilted her head to the side. Flick didn't think much of the questions, figuring they weren't too rude or anything. Just simple converstation questions was all. The brunette did love a good converstation, and getting to know people.

[/li][/ul] Marcello expected Flick’s interest. New York was cool in his opinion. Laced with skyscrapers, parks, entwined subway tracks, and the entire historical milieu, New York City is not as shy as Salt Lake. “Yeah, it is quite different. Salt Lake is a lot smaller, but that just means less walking.” He smirked, “In New York it seems walking is quicker than driving through all the traffic.”
Miss New York City, the Big Apple, Gotham, Empire City – yes and no. He thought about Flick’s question shortly, the same question he asked him self a couple times. Many problems originated in his birth city, and Salt Lake was a sweet retreat form the “hostile” ambiance he protruded. “At times I do miss New York City, my father, and my friends.” – His enemies he kept out, “However, It’s becoming cozy living here. I like it.” – I believe that is the pizza delivery,” Marcello added as a beat-up old red car came into view.
The driver drove slowly down the street toward them, looking over the house numbers. He eventually made it to the right house, parked along the curb, and carried the pizza bag to the porch. “A small veggie pizza?” He asked unbuttoning the bag and taking out the box containing their dinner.

'Yeah, it is quite different. Salt Lake is a lot smaller, but that just means less walking. In New York it seems walking is quicker than driving through all the traffic.' She smiled, nodding her head understandingly. When she went to NYC, she remembered how hard it was to get to the places they wanted to go. Walking was sometimes faster then a taxi, because of the long lines of cars. She liked the smaller Salt Lake City to call home. It was easy to drive to where you wanted to go, because of little traffic. She could also walk whenever she felt like it. The weather was always nice enough to take a stroll. Sure, it did get cool, but Flick knew she wouldn't be able to deal with the cold temperatures of the NYC winters.
'At times I do miss New York City, my father, and my friends. However, it’s becoming cozy living here. I like it.' Flick nodded her head slowly, before frowning ever so slightly. She caught that his father was still back there. At least, that's what it sounded like. When she started to open her mouth to say something, he spoke once more. 'I believe that is the pizza delivery.' Her head turned to where he was looking. A cliche looking pizza car pulled up into the survey. Flick watched it find the house, her brown eyes following it's every turn until it was pulled up infront of her home.
Flick stood, pulling some cash she had ready from the pocket of her sweater. 'A small veggie pizza?' Nodding her head, the brunette flashed a pretty smile as she passed the man the cash. "Yup, thanks," she replied, recieving the pizza box from him. "Keep the change," she nodded as he tried to give some money back. WIth a smile, he took off. The small red car drove away, out of the survey and out of sight.
Turning, she walked back to the steps and sat down once more beside Marcello, opening the hot box to the delicious smelling pizza inside. "Dig in," she smiled, offering him the box to take a slice. The pizza was only 4 slices, enough for them to each have two. She took a slice of her own and nibbled a bit off the end. After a minute, she spoke, hoping not to sound rude. "So your dad still lives in New York..?" she asked quietly.

Marcello took a slice, and then laid the box between them on the porch. His piece of pizza held many mushrooms and black olives on it. Warm strings of cheese hung off the side and the sweet aroma of the tomato sauce made his mouth water. He had a reason to examine every element of his food, which was not something he did on an average basis. Marcello thought about the murmured question Flick asked regarding his father.
It was indeed true his father still lived in New York City, separate from his family he allegedly loved. Marcello understood his father’s placement though. He worked for a large company that traveled around the world, and with that, he had an important obligation to uphold for the sake of the corporation.
“Yes,” Marcello began, first contemplating as to answer. It was not a big deal, but he preferred to listen to others, and keep his life on the sideline. “His job has yet to transfer him to a Salt Lake Office.” Not as if that would matter much, Marcello Sr. traveled rather than sat at a desk all day.
“This is good pizza,” He later said after taking a bite. “Do you go to that pizza parlor often?” Despite his heritage, Marcello rarely ate pizza any more. He supposed he lost his taste for it after living on it a few years ago when he worked at a pizza parlor in New York City.

The veggies were fresh and the cheese was smothered on. Just the way she loved it. Pink lips in a small smile, she brought the pizza to her mouth and took a bite. It was hot, but just the right temperature to be able to eat it. She delighted in the pizza, before turning back to her new found companion to listen. 'His job has yet to transfer him to a Salt Lake Office.' The simple Flick was content with the answer, and didn't push for anything else. It wasn't her business. "Oh," she nodded in return.
'This is good pizza. Do you go to that pizza parlor often? Flick looked back up and nodded in agreement. "I don't actually go there often, but it's the only place I order from," she admitted with a grin. The pizza there was what she called amazing. It was always hot, never cold, the toppings were fresh and the quality was top notch. "Their pizza is like, the best," she chuckled, taking another bite from her slice. "One girl I know works there, and she says they are over run by business. I guess that proves my point," she laughed with a grin. Flick's laugh had a chime to it, like a bell or something. It was soft and cute, not annoying at all. Her mother commented that it reminded her of a fairy, though Flick had no idea what a fairy's laugh would sound like.
The sun was sitting across the sky, hovering above the horizon. It threatened to vanish, leaving nothing but it's red remains in the brilliantly orange sky. Looking across, it was clear that within less then thirty minutes, the sun would be gone for the day, and the streaks it had painted low across the sky would be fading too. Then night would take over, the sky covered with it's satin black blanket, luminated with the shimmering stars and moon. Flick loved to watch the day turn into night, and vice versa. It was so calming, so peaceful. In those moments of a sunset, she liked to give her thanks to God for the beauty he had created.
Finishing the pizza, she stood up from the porch and opened the door. Fletch, her eight year old husky, came waddling to the door as he heard it open. Happily, the brunette broke the crust in half and gave the one dog the piece from her hand. Whistling, she waited for Friday, her new black lab dog to come. Sure enough, the crazy female came trotting along and happily caught the other half of the crust in her mouth. Flick shut the door before they could come outside and sat back beside Marcello. "Do you like dogs?" she asked curiously with a lopsided smile.
